Challenge

Northern California-based tattoo artist trio Electric Oni really allowed our creative juices to flow on their website. But we keep it civilized, so we constrained the visuals to fit the vision of the artists and overall theme of their business. They wanted to not only promote their service, but to also display their dynamism and breadth of talent across several disciplines, all of which lend a unique approach to ink.

Solution

Our graphic design team didn't start Electric Oni by looking at an empty web browser. They looked at the artists, their art, their tattoo work, their locale, and then took pen to paper. We didn't want initial technical constraints, so we modeled a layout based on the decor of the shop. We chose sketched portraits to introduce the artists, and showcased mediums – beyond tattoo – with which the artists work. Coupled with deep hues and striking highlights, this amalgamation of artistry culminates with the final product. We didn't want to simply pen a gallery of tattoo images, we wanted to build upon the artistic merits of Electric Oni to induct the visitor into the esoteric nature of their trade.
